Data Engineer (Mid-Level)
Join us on a client engagement building a modern data platform: pipelines, data models and lakehouse technologies in production.
The role
We are looking for a mid-level Data Engineer to join us on a client engagement building a modern data platform. You'll design, build and operate data pipelines, model data for analytics and reporting, and work with lakehouse technologies in production, often in regulated settings where quality, security and process matter.
You'll work closely with senior engineers and architects, so there's real room to grow into platform and architecture work.
This is a 6-month fixed-term employment contract with the option to extend. We're looking to build a longer-term working relationship with the right person.
What you'll do
- Design, build and maintain batch and streaming data pipelines
- Develop data processing jobs with Python, SQL and Apache Spark
- Design data models and implement them on lakehouse and relational storage (Iceberg, Delta Lake, PostgreSQL)
- Orchestrate, schedule and monitor workflows, making pipelines reliable, observable and recoverable
- Build datasets and reports that support analytics and decision-making
- Write clean, tested, version-controlled code and contribute to code reviews and CI/CD practices
- Collaborate with client teams to understand requirements and translate them into technical solutions
- Troubleshoot data quality, performance and integration issues
What you'll bring
- 3+ years of professional experience in data engineering or a closely related role
- Strong Python and strong SQL
- Solid software engineering fundamentals: clean code, testing, modularity, code review
- Good understanding of data pipelines, data architectures and workflow orchestration (e.g. Airflow, Dagster)
- Hands-on experience with relational databases, especially PostgreSQL
- Experience with data processing, data modelling and data reporting
- Working knowledge of Apache Spark and Apache Kafka
- Familiarity with open table formats such as Apache Iceberg or Delta Lake
- Proficiency with Git
- Analytical thinking and a structured approach to problem solving
- Fluent English, written and spoken
Highly appreciated
- Experience with Databricks
- Experience building streaming pipelines (Kafka, Spark Structured Streaming, Flink)
- Cloud experience on Azure and/or AWS
- CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins)
- Docker and Kubernetes
- Eligibility for security clearance, for defence-sector engagements
What we offer
- Full-time employment contract with full social insurance (B2B collaboration also possible)
- 6-month initial contract with option to extend
- Remote-first working, with occasional days on client premises in Athens
- Optional meal vouchers (Ticket Restaurant)
- Flexible start date, so you can give notice to your current employer
- Challenging work on production data platforms for enterprise, government and defence clients
- Direct access to senior engineers and architects, and real ownership of what you build
- Exposure to modern data architectures: data mesh, lakehouse, real-time data
Hiring process
- Technical interview: a one-hour call covering your experience and a technical discussion
- Final conversation and offer
